Students in pre-k and kindergarten will have an opportunity to experience nature. This experience will help students gain a better understanding of animals and their habitats. Students will use their senses to draw understanding of different animals’ adaptations.
Students in 1st and 2nd grade will enjoy this excursion as it focuses on the diversity of birds and their adaptations. Students will be able to make observations and make different inquiries about why a bird looks the way it does. Students will use what they learn from their observations to create their very own avian art.
Pass It On
Students in 3rd and 4th grade will discover scientific truths as they create art from past cultures. The Ward Museum acts as frame of reference with artifacts from the Eastern Shore and around the world. Students will get to experience these past traditions through art and make new assertions of what the past looked like.
Life on the Edge
Students in 5th and 6th grade will get to experience environmental science through arts and nature. Students will make different inquiries about both the conservationist and opportunist. They will investigate the importance of the Chesapeake Watershed and the many resources that it provides for those living on the Eastern Shore.

Students in 7th and 8th grade will be introduced to journaling and graphing data. Students will make detailed inquiry in the adaptations of birds. Students will use their scientist eyes to identify birds and report them to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology eBird database.

Lunch at the Museum
While the Museum cannot provide food for your visit, we are happy to share our space with your students and make our outdoor tables and indoor lobby space available for visitors to enjoy lunch in; before or after their excursion.
Many students are interested in visiting the Ward Museum Giftshop. We are happy to accomodate you and your class in the Giftshop, just click the box that says "giftshop" on the fieldtrip request form.
FREE Discovery Backpack Program
Enhance your students exploration of nature with our Discovery Backpack Program! This program makes it easy for groups to interact with nature and learn together during a self-guided or docent-guided visit to the Norman Glenn Nature Trail. The backpacks, funded by Chesapeake Bay Gateways Network, are filled with tools to assist students' nature exploration on the trail.
Museum Tour - All Ages
The Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art is proud of its extensive collection of wildfowl decoys and artistic carvings. They are a unique art form indigenous to the Chesapeake Bay, closely tied to the history of the region. Guided tours are available to help students best appreciate the wonders within our museum and tie the exhibits to their curricular studies.
Guided Nature Trail Tours - All Ages
Guides will lead your class through the Norman Glenn Nature Trail along Schumaker Pond, identifying many of our wetland plants, animals, insects, and birds. Binoculars and trail guides are provided!
Self-Guided Visits (All Ages)
There are many ways to greatly enhance your self-directed museum visit and nature trail explorations. Activity guides, scavenger hunts and other exhibit materials are available by request during reservation.
