A lifelong interest in birds combined with years of sculptural and design work in the family display business led Kaune to begin carving birds. Primarily a self-taught carver, he has had some formal art training at Washington State University in Pullman, WA. Since 1981, Kaune's carvings have been shown at exhibitions throughout the United States. He has won over 60 Best of Show awards at carving competitions and Best in World at the Ward World Championship in 1988. His work can be seen in the permanent collections of the Ward Museum, the North American Wildlife Art Museum and in private and corporate collections in countries throughout the world.
