Harry K. Shourds

(1890 - 1943) Ocean City, NJ

Harry K. Shourds, the son of Harry V. Shourds, was born and raised in Tuckerton. He helped his father with the decoy business and market hunting and painted houses along with him in the off seasons. As a young man, Harry moved to Ocean City and started his own business as a painting contractor. Harry was an avid fisherman and hunter and fed his three sons and daughter with the game he caught. During the evening or on the days the weather did not allow for painting, Harry carved his decoys. The bulk of his output was black ducks. Though the decoys created by his father are of a bit better quality, the Tuckerton birds carved by Harry K. are valuable just the same.
