The Ward Museum’s Volunteers Contribute Nearly 10,000 Hours To The Museum Each Year

We are always looking for new and returning volunteers to work with us!

Join a growing group of enthusiastic people who enjoy art, nature and tradition in all the facets of the Ward Museum. Volunteers carry out the mission of the Ward Museum in every way and support efforts to preserve and promote regional cultural traditions. There are a variety of volunteer needs, including special events, mailing, gallery openings, and education programs.

Volunteer training is a constant endeavor with a formal training classes several times a year. The purpose of this event is to train docents and learn some more history about the Ward brothers and the museum. All volunteers are encouraged and welcome to attend.

Education Department– Volunteers will assist the education team with our programs which include Drop in Art (free family art program), a reading program called Nature Tales for Tots, museum school trips and more. Activities can include reading to students, leading them in craft-making and tours through the museum.

Reception & Gallery Openings – Volunteers will assist during our new gallery opening receptions; possible tasks include preparing and transporting food, bartending, and cleanup duties.

Special Events – Volunteers can assist in one of the many roles during any of our 3 large special events: the Wildfowl Expo in October, the World Carving Championship in April, and the Art in Nature Photography Festival in August.

  • World Championship – Volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks to be performed at the Annual Ward World Championship Wildfowl Carving Competition during the last weekend in April each year.
  • Art in Nature Photo Festival – The Art in Nature Photo Festival is an annual photography competition in August. The museum will be in need of volunteers to help facilitate this event, and make sure that is runs as smoothly as possible.

Maintenance and Facilities – Volunteers assist the facilities team in keeping both the inside and outside of the Museum looking tidy and presentable for the public. Tasks may include: dusting and sweeping museum galleries, cleaning up after events, and doing work outside on the lawn and museum grounds.

Accounting – Volunteers assist the accounting department various tasks and record keeping concerning museum finances. Some accounting and Microsoft experience preferred.

Administration – Volunteers will perform various offices tasks that can include filing documents, organizing office space, preparing outreach materials, working in our library and more.

Bilingual Interpreters – Volunteers will help translate our museum audio tour for non-English speaking visitors. Spanish speaker are especially needed.
